2021 Book Club

It wasn’t all that long ago that I said I’d never be back in this space but here we are! I’m constantly sending out book recommendations to friends and texting out quotes from my recent reads so my friend Victoria recently suggested that I start a book club! Reading has been my “go-to” since finding out Callaway was sick and then after his loss. It’s helped to ground me in the truth of the Word and then it’s given me opportunities to dig into books “just for fun” and have something to do besides scroll social media. The books I’ve picked to read alongside you for the remainder of 2021 are books that I’m really excited about reading and I hope that you’re excited too!

Here’s a little information before we get started:

Go ahead and sign up for book club emails here if you want to join! Any updates will come first to the newsletter so make sure you’re subscribed if you want to be in the know.

I’ll probably share a big book review here on the blog at the end of the month but I might share quotes or things I’m enjoying about each book throughout the month on instagram. You can use the hashtag #bookclubwithnicole (I know this is a horrible hashtag but it hasn’t been used before and I don’t have the mental space to come up with something witty haha) for others to see when you share about what you’re enjoying about each book! You can also tag me @nicolevcole and I’d love to interact with you through each book!

All the books we’re reading can be found for under $16 on Amazon and most are on the Scribd app! I’ve come to really love Scribd and I think it’s the best digital reading service, in my opinion. I think it’s $12 a month and it’s FULL of good e-books and audio books. I usually try to read at least 2 books a month on it and I’ve gotten my money’s worth! You can also check your local library and see if you can find any of these titles there!

Okay, here’s our list for the remainder of 2021!

July

Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund

I read this book at the end of 2020 and it’s probably one of the most impactful books I’ve ever read when it comes to understanding the heart of Christ. It’s obviously a re-read for me, but I think this book is crucial in really starting to grasp who Christ is and how that impacts us as sinners and sufferers.

August

Dark Clouds, Deep Mercy by Mark Vroegop

I’ve recommended this book innumerable times over the last several months. This is hands down one of the best books I could have read this year as we’ve walked through loss and suffering and even if you don’t think you’re in a season of suffering yourself you either know someone who is, or you’ll be in it sooner or later. It’s an amazing read.

September

Holier Than Thou by Jackie Hill Perry

This book will launch in August and I cannot wait to get my hands on it! I heard her recently on a podcast and she talked a little about the holiness of God and I know her deep dive in this book is going to be really good.

October

Turning of Days by Hannah Anderson

I thought October would be the perfect month to slow down and read this book about how the natural world, the changing of seasons, points us to the God of creation.

November

Habits of Grace by David Mathis

I can always (ALWAYS) use a refresher and encouragement to dig into the spiritual disciplines!

December

Praying the Bible by Donald Whitney

This is a short read (perfect for a busy December) but I’ve heard it’s such a good one for learning how to practically pray scripture.

It’s going to be such a fun half of 2021 reading through these books with you!
